Dr. Binder attended Harvard University, majoring in Biological Anthropology, and was awarded the prestigious Hoopes Prize for his summa cum laude senior honors thesis "Serotonin and behavioral state." Aspiring to pursue both neuroscience and clinical medicine, he enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program at Duke University, graduating in 1999 with combined M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. While at Duke, he decided on a career in clinical neurosurgery and research. Between 1999 and 2005, Dr. Binder completed a surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco. Following residency, he won the prestigious William P. Van Wagenen international traveling fellowship from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons to go to Germany for a one-year epilepsy surgery fellowship at the University of Bonn. Since January 2010, Dr. Binder has been in private practice in neurological surgery in Orange County and Pomona and also accepted research and teaching positions at the University of California, Riverside, where he runs the NIH-funded Translational Neuroscience Laboratory and teaches in the UC Riverside School of Medicine.
